Newman Center Happenings

One of my favorite places on campus is the Newman Center, a place for Catholic students to worship, study, and just hang out. Several fun Newman Center events kept me busy last week:

Ladies' Night
A couple times a semester, the women FOCUS missionaries organize a Ladies' Night for all the girls involved in bible studies to catch up with each other. The event started with mocktails with funny names, like "chastity on the beach." Then a student leader shared a story about her experiences with dating, followed by a talk given by one of the missionaries about "guarding men's hearts." The whole point was to avoid leading guys on. I feel like I don't really have a problem in that area, since I've only dated Adam and only talk to his friends, but it was still a fun evening of fellowship!

Manfred Honeck Visit
On Thursday afternoon, the musical director of the Pittsburgh Symphony lectured about his faith. Since he's Austrian, it was a little hard to understand his accent at times, but it was really interesting to hear about his faith journey and meet a world-class conductor.

Rednal Benefit
The Newman Center owns this amazing retreat house about an hour outside of Pittsburgh and holds a fundraising dinner every year to maintain the site. Students are allowed to attend the benefit for free if they help before and afterwards. One of my fellow students is training at the Culinary Institute and prepared a delicious meal of hand-made pierogies, roast beef, and chocolate cake. I was most excited about getting to wear my new semi-formal dress that I'd gotten at Marshalls for only $10 over Christmas Break. It was a very classy affair!
