Pitt Arts

My school has this really great program, Pitt Arts, that gives students a chance to experience the fine arts for free, usually accompanied my transportation and dinner/dessert. Last week, I was lucky enough to attend three Pitt Arts events.

Mary's Wedding
This event started out with a delicious dinner at a small Italian restaurant, Brushetta. After a lovely meal of salad and pasta, we headed over to the theater. The play was set in western Canada during World War One. Because of the title, I thought the love story would have a happy ending, but I was sadly mistaken. The set was really minimal, so Adam and I got a kick out of watching the actors riding imaginary horses. Hilarious!

La Boheme
We got tickets to the opera with Pitt Arts' Cheap Seats program for Saturday night. We knew that it took place in Paris, so we were a little surprised when we realized they were singing in Italian. Overall, it was a little disappointing compared to the other opera we've seen, The Grapes of Wrath, because it just didn't have enough story for a three hour performance. Adam and I definitely regretted missing Pitt's appearance in the Elite Eight for this underwhelming experience.

Marjane Satrapi
On Monday night, Evelyn and I went a lecture given by the author of Persepolis, a graphic novel about her childhood in Iran. Before the event, we feasted on chicken penne and tiramisu at Joe Mamma's, my favorite local eatery. It was so interesting to hear about how Marjane decided on a graphic novel and her perceptions of America. I'm looking forward to watching the movie this weekend.
