I think writing thank you notes are very important. Not just for birthday and Christmas gifts, but for every time someone {who is not part of your immediate family} does you a favor. Today, I mailed three thank you notes. One to Adam's mom for hemming a pair of jeans for me. One to my roommate's parents for moving my belongings out of storage. And one to my grandparents for hosting me and Adam in Ottawa last week. I know a lot of people have trouble thinking of what to say in these type of notes, so I'll give you a little demonstration.
Step One: Buy some adorable note cards.
Step Two: Thank the receiver of the note for the favor or gift.
"Dear Grandma and Grandpa: Thank you so much for hosting me and Adam in Ottawa last week!"
Step Three: Elaborate on how grateful you are for their generosity.
"We had a great time touring Parliament, eating at the Greek Fest, and playing with my littlest cousins."
Step Four: Mention something that's going on your life since you last spoke.
"We have moved in to our dorms at Pitt and are looking forward to classes starting. I will be working as a Teaching Assistant and Adam will be working as a Research Assistant."
Step Five: Mention something you know is going on in their life.
"Have fun on your trips to Quebec City and Las Vegas this fall!"
Step Six: Sign & address your note. Try to mail it no more than three days after the favor or gift was bestowed. {I got back from Canada on Saturday and mailed the note today.}
"Love, Caitlin"
