Advent Thus Far

We're almost a week into advent already. Want to see some very low-quality photos of how we've decorated this year?

I thought so.

We've got our stockings hung on the mantel, along with previous years' Christmas cards and our nativity scene. Baby Jesus will join the party on Christmas morning, but until then he's tucked behind the crèche. We've got baskets of seasonal library books on the hearth. Unwrapping a book each night is a little complicated for us - we just put them all out for Claire to peruse at her leisure.

Our advent calendar is one of those that slowly assembles a nativity scene. Much better than cheap chocolate. We found ours at a festival booth a few months ago.

We're doing a Jesse Tree for the first time this year. I ended up ordering our ornaments from Redfearn Felt. They're each in one of those little red bags, a clearance find at the Land of Nod last year. Several of the daily readings have been in Claire's Bible for Little Ones, which is perfect for her age group. We also have Tomie dePaola's Bible Stories and the New Catholic Picture Bible as well, although those aren't ideal for two-year-old attention spans.

Lastly, we've been lighting our advent wreath each night. When we sit down to dinner, we light the candle, say a prayer (the first page of this My First Prayers for Christmas board book) and sing the first verse of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. The girls love this and would absolutely not let you forget a night.

Oh, I would be remiss not to mention our Little People nativity! We actually keep this with Noah's Ark in the playroom all year long, but since we moved it to the coffee table it's become the favorite toy in the house.

Do you have big plans for St. Nicholas Day tomorrow? I promised Claire that if she took a nap this afternoon, we'd write a Christmas letter for him this evening. She's currently snoozing away, so I guess I should get to addressing Christmas cards!
