Wedding Week: Anniversary Festivities

We spent our anniversary weekend at a little resort in Canaan Valley, West Virginia. Did you know Adam was actually born in West Virginia? His family relocated to Houston when Adam was 10. So, we chose West Virginia as our vacation locale because it has a special place in Adam's heart. And I'd never been!

We left on Friday evening, right after Adam's research conference. With rush hour traffic and a bad rain storm, it took a little longer than anticipated to reach our destination. We stopped for dinner in Maryland and checked in at the hotel around nine. Adam drove the whole way, while I provided the entertainment - reading aloud Tina Fey's hilarious autobiography.

Cannan Valley is a big ski destination, so the next morning we rode the resort's "scenic chair lift."

Then we headed into town. We browsed in a big artisan gallery, Mountain Made, and stopped for lunch at a burrito place.

After lunch, we checked out Blackwater Falls.

We went to Mass at a teeny tiny church. We love getting to visit different churches when we're on vacation.

We ended the day with a delicious dinner back at the resort. Since this is their off-season, they were doing a little construction. We saw a deer wandering around the construction site!

On Sunday morning, we did some hiking in a beautiful area known as Dolly Sods.

We found some blueberries and saw a butterfly.

And we snapped a first anniversary photo, which I'm hoping will become a yearly tradition.

Then we headed home. For our big anniversary dinner, we decided to recreate the food from our wedding. So, we had fajitas as the main course and derby pie for dessert. Even though we were just at our apartment, I convinced Adam to dress up to make the evening feel a little fancier.

After dinner, we opened our new family bible to read the verses we chose for our wedding. We ended the night with another installment of the John Adams miniseries that we started a month ago but still haven't finished - romantic choice, right?!
