The home tour continues with the kitchen! Here is last week's installment, in case you missed it.
So, when you walk into our apartment, you are greeted by a cheerful door mat.
As you close the door, you see the yarn wreath I posted about yesterday. My apron, from Target a few years back, hangs on the wall.
To the right of the door is our stove/oven/microwave area, with oven mitts and frequently used spices nearby for easy access.
To the right of the stove is a big window. Beneath the window is a boot tray from Ballard Designs, where we stash our shoes.
Here's a shot of one side of the kitchen. I love, love, love our dishwasher. My previous college apartments didn't have one. We keep our dishes and pots and such in all those cabinets. A few less frequently used items, like cake stands, sit on top of the cabinets.
Our weekly menu is a chalkboard decal from Target. I use chalk pens from Michael's to write on it. The calendar hanging next to the menu is about the saints. The random chair was here when we moved in. It comes in handy often when we have people over for dinner. Other items on this side of the counter are our spice rack, tea, cocoa, gummy vitamins and a note pad for grocery lists.
We keep our knife block, utensil caddy and paper towel holder near the sink. The handy soap dispenser holds both dish soap and hand soap. The dish rack is from the Martha Stewart Collection at Macy's. Around the sink, we always have one dish towel and two dish cloths - one for washing dishes and one for wiping down the table & counter.
The other corner of the counter is home to our electric can opener and beloved stand mixer. The turquoise canisters are from an antique store and the goose measuring cups are from Anthropologie a few years back.
Here's a shot of the other side of the kitchen. The door leads to our bathroom, which you will hear about next week.
Those turquoise prints were a wedding gift from my sister. Sadly, the etsy shop is no longer open. Their yellow frames are just $5 Ikea Ribba frames that I spray painted. Under the prints are our trash can and a little bin for recycling.
Ahh, the pantry. Toilet paper, paper towels and a cooler are stored on the floor. The bottom shelf is home to canned goods. The next shelf has grains - pasta, oatmeal, rice, cookies and bread. Granola bars, croutons and popcorn are hiding in the back. The next shelf shelf up holds all our baking supplies. And the top shelf has a few more baking items, Ziploc baggies and brown paper bags storing potatoes and onions. We had a weevil incident last fall, so now I'm obsessed with keeping everything in plastic containers. They are from the Martha Stewart Collection at Macy's.
The little space between the pantry and the fridge is home to a "B" hook from Anthropologie and and a bible verse calendar. On the fridge, you see a little art I made at a "Painting with Prayer" Ladies' Night at the Newman Center, our favorite morning prayer and a list of family goals. Those two turquoise bins above the fridge hold cleaning supplies. They are from the Martha Stewart Collection at Home Depot. Yep, I am a Martha fiend. I just love that shade of blue. Next to the bins are trash bags, paper napkins and aluminum foil/plastic wrap/waxed paper.
And, finally, our kitchen table. It's not online, but it's the cheapest dining set {$120, I think} at Ikea. The rug underneath is just a cheap carpet remnant thing from Target. The yellow and turquoise place mats were a recent find on the Target clearance rack.
Kitchen To-Do List:
- Paint our random extra chair a fun color.
- Find matching oven mitts.
- Make chair cushions.
- Eventually paint the table white. And the chairs either white or a fun color. This might not happen until we move though.

I like the idea of the nice soap dispenser - it would look so much better than having the ugly plastic bottles sitting on the sink all the time! Also, I see you have a napkin rack - I've been wanting one of those. Where'd you find it?
ReplyDeleteLastly, thank you so much for the chalk pen idea! I've never heard of them, but they are exactly what we need! Recently, we got a little "chalkboard" - it sounds like maybe it's similar to the type you have - that just unrolls and sticks to the wall. It was appealing because it's big and super cheap ($3). But as soon as we put it up, we found that chalk does not actually write on it well. I planned to use half of it to list weekly meals, and half to list projects that needed to be done around the house. But you can barely read my handwriting on the thing. It looks TERRIBLE. But chalkpens...those could work. I seriously think I am going out to buy those today!!
