More House Progress

Another month down and three more rooms organized. Definitely not done by any means, but functional for sure.

In our last apartment, we had a walk-in closet where we kept our dresser. This time there's no space for a dresser anywhere in the room, so we bought a leather storage ottoman from Target to store out-of-season clothing. We also keep pajamas, underwear, and socks in the bottom two drawers of our nightstands.

We used to keep office and craft supplies in our nightstands, though, so we bought a fun kitchen cart from Ikea to store those instead.

That mirror is just one of those cheap over-the-door ones. I propped it up there while trying on clothes a few days ago, but it's completely not baby-friendly. I'd love to have a more substantial one on that wall one day though.

When we moved in, both of the sliding closet doors were crooked. The landlords had a handyman out to repair a few things, but he only fixed one of the doors. Oops! They're kind of annoying and make it hard to get it the clothes hanging in the middle, so we're toying with maybe taking the doors off completely and hanging curtains instead.

The living room saw the most changes from when we moved in. First off, we have more seating! Our parents each generously gave us a chair as a housewarming gift. Then we hired someone to mount the tv above the fireplace. That allowed us to move in our other bookshelf, which had been just hanging out in the guest room. And, finally, we hung some coat hooks because we use the actual coat closet (the door next to the bookshelf) as storage for our vacuum, ironing board, extra leaf for the table, etc.

We moved our old tv stand into the hallway that leads from the kitchen to the playroom to function as our family altar. We just have the two extra chairs for the dining table flanking it.

And here's the playroom, the only carpeted space in the house. We wanted to create several different "zones" for different types of play in here. So here's the reading zone - a tent, basket of stuffed animals, rocking chair, and some pictures ledges (previously in our old dining room) repurposed as bookshelves. Dividing the zones in each corner, we have a cube organizer for blocks, balls, cars, baby toys, little people, etc.

In the other corner, we have the performance zone. We hung an old mirror and some coat hooks to make a little dress-up area. We also have baskets full of puppets and musical instruments. And then we have the art zone - a cabinet holding supplies (it used to be our family altar), a cheap bulletin board to display finished masterpieces, and a little table and chairs.

The door in the very edge of this shot leads out to the garage. This wall will one day be the "playing house" zone. We've already got a doll stroller, shopping cart, vacuum, and doll bed. But we scored an old entertainment center at Goodwill that we're planning to turn into a play kitchen. Our goal is to have it done by Maggie's birthday in October! Right now we just have a basket of puzzles there instead.

Our goal for the month of May is to organize the garage and the guest room. We hope to get to a little landscaping done as well, but it's the trickiest to accomplish since the only time we are both guaranteed to have our hands free, it's dark outside!

P.S. Here's how the place looked the first week we moved in and here's the first few rooms we organized - the kitchen, nursery, and bathrooms.
